Charitable Remainder Trust

Options for Significant Contributions

If you’ve built a substantial estate and are seeking a steady income stream, a charitable remainder trust may be an ideal option.

This type of trust provides you or other designated individuals with annual income for life or for a term not exceeding 20 years, from the assets you contribute to the trust. Once the trust term ends, the remaining balance is directed to Autism Life and Living.

These gifts may offer you tax advantages along with the potential for income. There are two types of trusts, each offering distinct benefits:

The annuity trust pays a fixed dollar amount each year, based on your initial choice. Your payments remain the same, regardless of changes in the trust’s investments.

The unitrust pays a variable amount each year, determined by a fixed percentage of the trust’s fair market value. The payment amount is reassessed annually, so if the trust’s value increases, your payments will rise as well. Conversely, if the trust’s value decreases, your payments will be lower.

An Example of How It Works

Rebecca, 77, wants to support ALL while also increasing her future income. To accomplish this, she sets up a charitable remainder unitrust, which provides her with annual lifetime payments equal to 5% of the fair market value of the trust assets, recalculated each year. She funds the trust with $500,000 in assets.

In the first year, Rebecca receives $25,000 from the trust. Her payments will fluctuate annually based on the updated value of the trust’s assets. By establishing and funding the trust, she qualifies for a federal income tax charitable deduction of $290,360*, which results in a tax savings of $92,915, given her 32% tax bracket.

*Based on a 5.2% charitable midterm federal rate. Deductions and calculations will vary depending on your personal circumstances.
